Homestake Gold Ore Offerings here include sections (discs) of core cut from ore at the Homestake Mine, Lead, South Dakota during the years of its operation Reference: see the photographs in USGS Professional Paper 26 |
|
Dimensions given below: diameter x thickness When larger core are cut at right angles by a diamond saw, the last part to be cut breaks leaving a "scar." The reason for this break is either cleavage plains or brittleness of the ore. On all 4.5 cm diameter core I have sanded that edge to a bevel which leaves the specimen more attractive and exposes more ore. I have not altered the 14.5 cm discs in any way. The holes in these discs are either 1) drill sites of previous coring or 2) sampling the core for assay work, or 3) some other reason. If you have an idea please let me know. |

Homestake Ore Disc Specimen # 1405 14.5 x 1 cm $ 100 This disc is actually round, I just knicked the bottom edge of the disc in this photo. The rough broken edge on one side of the disc is typical when a diamond saw blade reaches the edge of a core - it just breaks off giving the appearance you see here. |
